Safer Use of Mobiles in Vehicles (SUMV)
Driver distraction is a major cause of crashes on Australian roads, with many resulting in devastating injury and even death. An initiative of the National Road Safety Partnership Program, the SUMV subcommittee is a group of representatives from a diverse range of organisations committed to a common goal: promoting the safe use of mobile devices in vehicles in Australia to reduce the risk of road crashes.
Employers have a legal responsibility for the safety of their staff in the workplace and this extends to their vehicles. By implementing a safer mobile use in vehicles policy, organisations will be proactive in promoting the wellbeing and safety of their workers.
We encourage all organisations across Australia to take a proactive role in reducing this risk for their staff, stakeholders and the community as a whole.

With the sheer volume of communications we all receive on a daily basis, cut through and engagement is always a challenge when communicating safe practice policies in the workplace.
Here are some more tips to implementing and promoting a safer mobile usage policy within your organisation:
Understand the issue, how widespread it is and what the risk looks like in your organisation specifically.
Engage leadership within your organisation early. It is vital they understand the issue, actively support the initiative and lead by example.
Implement a clearly defined policy that outlines what is and is not acceptable practice without any ambiguity.
All communications should clearly define the risk, communicate the law and promote the policy.
Develop an effective strategy to communicate the policy and engage your employees. What is the message and what is the best communication channel?
Purely negative messaging is not motivational. Focus on the positives of doing the right thing, not just the negatives of doing the wrong thing.
Messaging should be realistic about the behaviour we are asking of people projecting perfectionist messages on people doesn’t work.
